This blog is about GETTING STUFF DONE.

    • Are you a perfectionist?
    • Troubled by the feeling you need more chops, language, harmony etc. before you even begin to DO anything?
    • Intimidated by a mountain of musical information and your own Himalayan goals?
    • Want to be a fearless improvisor?
    • Want to see what it's like and what skills you need to work in West End theatre?

My name is Tommy Emmerton and I'm a freelance guitarist working in London. I'm the guitarist on The Book Of Mormon and have played with artists and bands as diverse as Al Jarreau, Katherine Jenkins and the BBC Big Band.

Practising to be a better musician is a huge part of my life.

I'm going to share my stratagems and practise secrets with you.

    • Being a perfectionist has its drawbacks. It can lead to PARALYSIS.

    • With this blog I'm creating STAKES. Public accountability and incentives are the keys to achieving my musical goals and you get to be part of the process.

    • I'm sharing my practice diary with you so you can see HOW, WHAT AND WHY a jobbing muso practises.

    • By teaching you my concepts, I get a deeper understanding of the material and you get lessons that will inspire you, motivate you and revolutionise the way you practise and create.

    • Increasing numbers of students are interested in working in West End theatre. I'm going to teach you the skills that will give you the edge over the competition.

Tommy grew up in the charming seaside sanctum of Barry, South Wales. As a twelve year old classical guitarist, he won the Vale Of Glamorgan Young Musician Of The Year competition and was to then receive the Michael Pritchard Award for Welsh rock guitarists at age seventeen. He went on to study jazz at Trinity College Of Music, jacked it in after the second year to do a spot of world touring with Canadian show, Barrage, and eventually managed to graduate from the Royal Academy Of Music after a mere seven years since embarking on higher education.
Tommy was the Trinity College of Music Big Band guitarist for two years and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra guitarist for five. He has toured with Katherine Jenkins, with jazz legends Eddie Henderson and Gary Bartz and has played numerous West End shows including; ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Billy Elliot’, ‘Joseph’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Thriller’, ‘Shrek’, ‘Ghost’ etc.  His own West End gigs have been; ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, ‘Fame’, ‘Jersey Boys’ and ‘Hair’ (playing rhythm guitar for Steely Dan alumnus, Elliott Randall). He is now doing 'The Book Of Mormon'.
In 2014, Tommy had the privilege of performing six sold-out shows at Ronnie Scott's with Al Jarreau to mark the 30th Anniversary of the 'Jarreau' album.
He is currently working on a project called 'Albert Snoid' with legendary ex-Steve Vai drummer, Pete Zeldman.
